haRMANy

HarMANY is the auditioned small group ensemble inclusive of the many voices within the LGBTQ+ community. The showcase group was formed in 2009 and has been guided ever since by director Ben Hagen (known previously as HarMENy). Members are given opportunities to perform repertoire that the larger chorus would be unable or unlikely to perform. The group looks to the world of pop music, Broadway, and tight harmonies for its inspiration. From Disney to Madonna, Ben has probably considered just about every possibility for songs and staging with HarMANY.

The mission of HarMANY is the same as the chorus: “a community champion, singing to promote harmony, ignite hearts, and move minds.” The group is also committed to representing DMGMC at local organizations and events when the larger group cannot perform.

Interested in joining?

All interested in joining must audition for the small group ensemble director and Artistic Director. Singers are asked to prepare a short memorized selection for the audition, and there will be some sight reading as well. Audition times will be publicized, but if singers would like to audition and are unavailable during that time, they can make other arrangements with the director.

Small group ensemble members must be:

  • Current singing members of the full chorus unless special exception is made by the Artistic Director of the large group.

  • Available for outreach performances and events when given advance notice.

  • Able and willing to perform movement on stage.

  • Able to memorize all music performed.

  • Committed to regular attendance for rehearsals and performances. Any unexcused absences would be a breach of membership in the small group.

First Year/New Members of the small group are probationary members for one full concert year.

Ben Hagen, HarMANY Director

Since HarMANY was founded in 2009, the group has found their groove – the sound has matured over the years and the blending is better than ever. As much as the focus is on the group, individual growth is also a benefit. Ben’s focus is not only on ensuring the right voices complement each other but his focus is also on ensuring the individual growth of each of the members.

Some of the group’s highlights include the many HarMANY performances at the GALA Festivals. In 2012, the group showcased themselves with a medley from Sister Act where they stripped off nuns’ habits to reveal tuxedos! Another huge hit with the Denver audience was their performance of "Bring on the Men." At the 2016 Denver GALA Festival, Ben was very proud that the guys were able to learn an entirely new set of music in three months (after finding out that securing the rights to perform songs from popular music theater was almost impossible). Ben’s creative mind has even put together an entire cheerleading singing and cheering routine for the next GALA Festival!
