Des Moines Gay Men’s Chorus Joins Forces with Twin Cities Gay Men’s Chorus for an Unforgettable Concert Experience

(DES MOINES, IA - February 11, 2025)—The Des Moines Gay Men’s Chorus (DMGMC) is thrilled to announce an exciting collaboration with the Twin Cities Gay Men’s Chorus (TCGMC) for a powerful and uplifting choral concert, Reclaim & Rise. Taking place on Saturday, March 22, at 2:30 PM at the Urbandale High School Performing Arts Center, this special performance promises to be a moving experience filled with strength, resilience, and joy.

At its core, this concert is a celebration of perseverance—of finding light in darkness and rising anew in the face of adversity. Through stirring choral arrangements and heartfelt performances, DMGMC and TCGMC will inspire audiences with a message of hope and unity. While the music will undoubtedly be powerful, the event will also be infused with laughter, joy, and the infectious energy that comes when people come together in song.

Adding to the excitement, Dr. Gerald Gurss, Artistic Director of the Twin Cities Gay Men’s Chorus, will serve as the guest conductor for the Des Moines Gay Men’s Chorus. Dr. Gurss, a respected choral conductor and composer, has led LGBTQ+ choruses across the country and is known for his work in fostering inclusive choral communities. He holds a doctorate in choral conducting and has composed and arranged music for numerous ensembles nationwide.

“Our chorus has always been about more than just music—we’re about community, about lifting each other up, and about making sure everyone’s voice is heard,” said Liz Cooney, Board President of the Des Moines Gay Men’s Chorus. “This collaboration with TCGMC is a perfect reflection of that mission. Together, we’re creating something truly special.”

This event is part of a larger initiative by TCGMC to extend its reach beyond the Twin Cities Metro area and engage with communities where queer visibility is less prevalent. Their project, Out of the Closet and Into the Burbs, takes their mission of “building community through music” on the road. Prior to the joint concert in Des Moines, DMGMC will join TCGMC for a performance in Apple Valley, MN, on Saturday, March 15, at 2:30 PM at Apple Valley High School

The Des Moines performance is a testament to the power of collaboration, resilience, and the ability of music to bring people together. Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to witness two dynamic choral groups uniting for a night of unforgettable music and community.
